
In an effort to raise public awareness about the terrible human cost of worldwide
famine, starvation and malnutrition, Médecins Sans Frontières launched
the Bracelet of Life campaign. It is a way of letting us see the reality of malnutrition.
WHAT IS THE BRACELET OF LIFE?
It is a colourful strip of paper, but it is also a real tool used by Médecins
Sans Frontières Volunteers to test whether a child is suffering from malnutrition.
By wrapping the Bracelet around the upper arm of a child under 5, a doctor or
nurse can tell how seriously malnourished a child is and what treatment they need.
The Bracelet is divided into four colours, as shown below.

In the field, the Bracelet of Life is called a MUAC, which
stands for Middle Upper Arm
Circumference. The MUAC bracelets look like this:
